AMTA Training Mechanics Day 6

Key Activities:

· Quick summary (but we did not do ourselves) the acceleration of a dropping object lab using a photogate and a picket fence. Students were to determine if mass affects the acceleration of gravity. NOTE: we do not recommend you talk about “g”.

· Force is defined an introduced.

· Types of forces broken down into interactions, and forces at a distance.

· Take some time to introduce the unit of force.

· Introduce some formalism around naming of forces (friction, normal, tension)

· A bunch of demos around normal forces that they exist, and that they seem to come in pairs. Hovercraft demos, i.e. what happens when you don’t have friction.

· Rules/Steps for generating Free-Body-Diagrams are given.

· Practice worksheet, whiteboarding on Free-Body-Diagrams.

· Quick demo with opposing Force Sensors and LoggerPro, surprising result.
